LEEP (Loop Electrical/Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) is the procedure conducted to remove precancerous tissues (abnormal cells that appear to be abnormal but are not yet cancerous) from the lower part of the uterus (cervix). During the LEEP procedure, a blade/thin wire is used to cut-out or remove a piece of the abnormal tissue for testing. LEEP is usually done to diagnose or treat precancerous cells in the cervix.

What LEEP involves at Magharibi Health Specialists

At Magharibi Health we offer quality, affordable and safe LEEP procedures and care to all women. Our doctors are well-trained professionals whose main priority is the safety and health of our patients.

Important Things To Know

  1. A LEEP  is recommended for women who have had a Pap smear that showed abnormal, potentially precancerous cells.
  2. Removing the cells will allow your doctor to determine what they are and whether further observation or treatment is needed
  3. LEEP can be used to diagnose genital warts which are a sign of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) which has been proven to cause cervical cancer.
  4. Risks associated with the procedure may include bleeding during/after the procedure, infection, emotional changes and scarring of the cervix.
  5. You shouldn’t take any medications that contain aspirin for five to seven days before your procedure, or as directed by your doctor.
  6. Your doctor will inject a local anaesthetic to numb your cervix before beginning the removal process.
After your cervix is numb, your doctor will pass the wire loop through the speculum and begin to scrape away any abnormal tissue. You may feel some pressure or slight cramping.

LEEP (Loop Electrical/Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)

Loop Electrical/Electrosurgical Excision Procedure- is a surgical procedure used to remove abnormal cells from the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. These abnormal cells may be precancerous, meaning they have the potential to become cancerous. During a LEEP procedure, a thin, electrically charged wire loop is used to carefully cut away a small piece of abnormal tissue. This tissue is then sent to a laboratory for examination.

LEEP is commonly performed to:

  • Diagnose precancerous cells detected on a Pap smear.
  • Treat precancerous cells to prevent them from developing into cancer.
  • Diagnose genital warts, which are often caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection linked to cervical cancer.

  2. The procedure helps determine the nature of the abnormal cells and whether further treatment or monitoring is necessary
  3. LEEP can be used to diagnose genital warts, a symptom of HPV infection
  4. Potential risks include bleeding, infection, emotional changes, and scarring of the cervix
  5. It is essential to avoid medications containing aspirin for five to seven days before the procedure, or as advised by your doctor
  6. A local anesthetic will be administered to numb your cervix before the procedure begins
  7. During the procedure, you may experience some pressure or mild cramping as the wire loop removes the abnormal tissue

LEEP Recovery and Aftercare

After a LEEP procedure, it’s normal to experience some discomfort, light bleeding, and cramping. Avoid sexual intercourse, tampon use, and douching for a specified period as advised by your doctor. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection. Most women recover fully within a few weeks. It’s essential to attend follow-up appointments for Pap smears to monitor cervical health.
