LEEP (Loop Electrical/Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) is the procedure conducted to remove precancerous tissues (abnormal cells that appear to be abnormal but are not yet cancerous) from the lower part of the uterus (cervix). During the LEEP procedure, a blade/thin wire is used to cut-out or remove a piece of the abnormal tissue for testing. LEEP is usually done to diagnose or treat precancerous cells in the cervix.
What We Do
At Magharibi Health we offer quality, affordable and safe LEEP procedures and care to all women. Our doctors are well-trained professionals whose main priority is the safety and health of our patients.
Important Things To Know
- A LEEP is recommended for women who have had a Pap smear that showed abnormal, potentially precancerous cells.
- Removing the cells will allow your doctor to determine what they are and whether further observation or treatment is needed
- LEEP can be used t diagnose genital warts which are a sign of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) which has been proven to cause cervical cancer.
- Risks associated with the LEEP procedure may include bleeding during/after the procedure, infection, emotional changes and scarring of the cervix.
- You shouldn’t take any medications that contain aspirin for five to seven days before your procedure, or as directed by your doctor.
- Your doctor will inject a local anaesthetic to numb your cervix before beginning the removal process.
After your cervix is numb, your doctor will pass the wire loop through the speculum and begin to scrape away any abnormal tissue. You may feel some pressure or slight cramping.
